BiPAP stands for bilevel positive airway pressure. It is a breathing apparatus that helps people get more air into their lungs. Created in the 1990s, it was developed from the CPAP model, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure. These devices are used to help treat breathing difficulties, particularly obstructive sleep apnea.

The BiPAP machine allows the air that is delivered through the mask to be set at one pressure for inhaling and another for exhaling. This makes BiPAP much easier for users to adapt to.  It also allows neuromuscular disease sufferers and those with underlying respiratory illnesses to use the device. These dual settings also allow people who use the device to get more air in and out of their lungs.
