CPAP

New York Home Health Care is an accredited organization by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Obstructive sleep apnea is a problem in which a person's upper airway collapses, causing breathing to stop temporarily, but repeatedly. Apnea sufferers sometimes wake up suddenly with a huge rousing snore. Their quality of sleep is usually poor and can lead to mental problems such as depression and lack of concentration. The physical health of the sufferer can also deteriorate as it may lead to other conditions later in life.

A CPAP machine works by maintaining a certain amount of air pressure within a mask that the person wears while he sleeps. The extra pressure allows the user to sleep by keeping his airway open. The problem with a CPAP, however, is that the person has to exhale against the extra pressure. This makes it unsuitable for certain people, including those suffering from neuromuscular diseases.
