 NEGATIVE PRESSURE WOUND THERAPY

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is one of the oldest forms of medicinal therapy used to heal the human body. Over the past decade there has been a significant increase in the use of this therapy and today NPWT provides clinicians with an important option for the advanced management of a variety of chronic and acute wounds. Smith & Nephew’s range of NPWT products have been developed to deliver all the clinical benefits of NPWT while improving:

  • Ease of use
  • Performance in patient comfort
  • Cost-effectiveness

 Indications for Use

RENASYS™- Foam or antimicrobial gauze Wound Dressing Kits with port are intended to be used in conjunction with Smith & Nephew Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) systems to deliver negative pressure to the wound. Smith & Nephew NPWT systems are indicated for patients who would benefit from a suction device, particularly as the device may promote wound healing.

NPWT is appropriate for use on the following wounds:

  • Chronic
  • Acute
  • Traumatic
  • Sub-Acute and dehisced wounds
  • Ulcers (such as pressure or diabetic)
  • Partial-thickness burns
  • Flaps and grafts

 Contraindications

The use of NPWT is contraindicated for:

  • Untreated osteomyelitis
  • Exposed arteries, veins, organs or nerves
  • Necrotic tissue with eschar present
  • Malignancy in wound (with exception of palliative care to enhance quality of life)
  • Non-enteric and unexplored fistulas
  • Anastomic sites

Smith & Nephew offers a portfolio of NWPT dressing kits to provide wound care professionals options depending on the individual needs of the patient, the wound, and the care setting. For the first time wound care professionals have the freedom to exercise their full clinical judgement and select an antimicrobial gauze or foam dressing with port in conjunction with one negative pressure wound therapy device manufacturer.

WHY FOAM?

As a proven and familiar Negative Pressure Wound Therapy wound filler, Smith & Nephew's RENASYS* foam dressings are an optimal choice for a wide variety of wound types. As the recognized industry standard, reticulated, open-cell, polyurethane foam dressings are easy to apply and the healing outcomes are proven by years of successful negative pressure use.

Recognized industry standard.

  • Foam is the most commonly used dressing in Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. It is easy to apply and appropriate for a wide range of wound types and sizes.

Proven efficacy.

  • Foam is proven to address the common treatment goals associated with negative pressure, including reductions in wound dimensions, exudate levels and wound odor, and an improvement in the quality of the wound bed.1

Designed for Healing.

  • The hydrophobic, open-pore properties help remove exudate and promote tissue granulation at the cellular level. Foam evenly distributes negative pressure at the wound site, helping to draw the wound edges together and prepare the wound bed for closure.

WHY GAUZE?

As part of the complete Smith & Nephew RENASYS* Negative Pressure Wound Therapy System, the RENASYS* gauze dressing kits help deliver customized therapy to even the most unique complexities of patients' wounds. The conformability and hydrophilic, non-adherent properties of the dressing kits make them well-suited for pain-sensitive areas, as well as irregularly shaped, tunneling and undermining wounds. Why gauze?

Enhanced patient comfort.

  • Gauze is ranked number one in patient comfort upon application and removal, and is suitable for most wound types and sizes.

High conformability.

  • Gauze is moldable and forgiving, making it easy to apply to any wound. It is especially suited to anatomically challenging locations with abnormal contours or undermining, such as the sacrum. It is also ideal for large surface areas, explored fistulas and tunneling wounds.

Powerful healing outcomes.

  • The antimicrobial properties of the RENASYS* gauze kits may help minimize the risk of infection, while the non-adherent material protects granulation tissue from trauma on removal. Gauze is also hydrophilic, enabling moist wound healing.
