When Pain Associated with Tendinitis Interrupts Your Daily Activity

Low Energy Shock Therapy

Applications

Tendinitis is an inflammation of a specific group of tendons as a result of injury. This condition may be caused by repetitive stress, direct trauma or age. In most cases, patients respond very well to established treatment regimens. Unfortunately, some patients do not and must therefore alter their lifestyle to accommodate the discomfort and pain of tendinitis. For those patients, a new application of an existing technology offers hope for this chronic and frequently debilitating condition. If you suffer from any of the following common problems, extracorporeal shock wave therapy may be appropriate for you.

What is ESWT?

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an exciting new technology that utilizes a concentrated stream of pulsed sound waves directed to a specific site to be treated. While there are different applications of this technology, this office utilizes the more patient friendly low-energy system. For the patient, this represents the following benefits:

  • Physician office based treatments
  • No anesthesia required
  • Short treatment time (approx. 15 min.)
  • No recovery time
  • Immediate results
How does ESWT work?

A soft, water filled bladder at the end of a movable arm is placed against area to be treated. Because of this design, the technologist can position the head at the exact site of your pain. This positioning is known as clinical focusing and maximizes the effectiveness of your treatment. During the course of your treatment, the technologist may move the shock head several times to insure coverage.

The pulse-like shock waves create several changes within the cells that aid in the healing process.

  1. Local nerve conduction is blocked resulting in a natural analgesic effect that may last up to 72 hours.
  2. ESWT causes the body to form new blood vessels that eventually will lead to the reparation of new tendons.
Where will I be treated?

In most cases, your treatments will take place in the convenience of your doctor's office up to three times. This is not only more cost effective than other procedures, but you will quickly be on your way to enjoying life.

When is ESWT appropriate for use?

Your doctor will be the best judge as to the type of treatment you require. In general terms, the application of ESWT is most appropriate after you have failed to respond to two or more of the following conventional treatments:

  • Rest
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Medication
  • Injections
Who covers the cost of ESWT?

Many insurance companies are covering the cost of treatment. If the doctor determines that you may benefit from ESWT, this office will contact your carrier to pre-certify your treatment. In the event that your carrier denies coverage, or you do not have insurance, a private pay option exists for you. Please discuss this option with the billing people in the doctor's office before therapy.

How do you become a patient?
  1. Your doctor will determine by medical examination, or history, whether Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) would be an effective treatment strategy for you.
  2. The doctor's office will submit your insurance information, along with diagnosis, to the billing company for pre-certification prior to treatment.
  3. Upon insurance verification, your doctor will be notified and a date will be established for the equipment and technician to come to the office for your treatment.
  4. If your carrier denies coverage, or you do not have insurance, a private pay option exists for you. Please discuss this option with the doctor's office.
